Reasons
Meningioma is a tumor of the meninges that arises from the cells of the arachnoid membrane and fuses tightly with the dura mater.
The cause of meningiomas, like other human cerebral tumors, is not fully known. Meningiomas are more common in women. Some meningiomas are accompanied by significant swelling of the brain, especially around giant meningiomas.
A characteristic feature of meningiomas is their continued growth. The possibility of total surgical removal depends on the location, size, and involvement of adjacent nerve structures in the tumor.
Degrees
Meningiomas are divided into 3 groups according to the degree of malignancy:
- typical (benign),
- atypical (semi-benign) and
- anaplastic (malignant).
After complete removal of benign meningiomas, the 5-, 10-, and 15-year recurrence-free survival is 93, 80, and 68%, respectively.
